Trading JPM Week: Deals and Guidance, Not Data
By Breakout Biotech Stocks · September 25, 2026
The Problem
Every January, traders who know how to trade ASCO and ESMO show up at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference expecting a data catalyst, and they miss the entire move. JPM week is not a data event. There are no abstracts, no late-breakers, no plenary halls. The catalysts are deals and guidance: a small biotech pre-announces a beat, or Big Pharma announces a bolt-on acquisition. If you are watching for a clinical readout, you are watching the wrong channel.
JPM Is Not ASCO
Medical-data conferences like ASCO and ESMO move stocks on abstract release day, when trial data drops online. JPM is a different animal. It is the biggest deal-making and guidance event of the biotech year. Three things move stocks during the week of January 11-14, 2027 in San Francisco:
| Catalyst | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Q4 / 2027 guidance pre-announcements | A company pulls forward good news or warns on the year ahead |
| M&A and licensing announcements | A buyout or partnership, often leaked in the week prior |
| Partnership rumors | Deal chatter that runs a small cap 30% before it is confirmed |
The medical-data conference guide covers the abstract rhythm. This guide covers the deal rhythm, because that is what actually moves stocks in January.
One nuance trips up newcomers: “guidance” at JPM does not mean earnings guidance. Most small and mid-cap biotechs are pre-revenue, so their guidance is cash runway commentary, pipeline timeline updates, and partnership readouts, not EPS. When a biotech “pre-announces” at JPM, it is usually confirming that the cash runway holds through the next catalyst, or signaling that a raise is coming. Read it through that lens.
Step 1: Mark the Dates
The 45th Annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference runs January 11-14, 2027 in San Francisco. The positioning window opens in late November, about six weeks before. By the first week of January, most of the re-rating has already started.
What to do: Put January 11-14 on your calendar now. Plan to be fully positioned by the end of the first week of January, not the week of the conference.
Step 2: Screen the “Will They Raise or Get Bought” Cohort
The stocks that move at JPM are small and mid caps with a 2027 catalyst and a cash runway question. A company with less than 18 months of cash and a major readout coming either raises capital (dilution) or gets acquired (premium). JPM week is where both outcomes get telegraphed.
H1 2026 was a $96 billion, 80-deal M&A market, and the typical buyout premium runs 50-100%. Big Pharma has a $300 billion patent-cliff problem to solve this decade, which is why bolt-on acquisitions in the $1-10 billion range are the dominant deal type.
What to do: Screen for sub-$5 billion market cap names with a 2027 PDUFA date or Phase 3 readout and less than 18 months of cash runway. Those are your JPM candidates. The 8-point M&A screen is the filter to run them through.
Step 3: Watch for the Pre-Announcement Tell
The cleanest signal is a change in the presentation schedule. A company that pulls its JPM presentation slot, or adds an unscheduled one, is usually about to pre-announce something: a deal, a data beat, or a guidance raise. The companies do not say this in advance. You read it in the calendar.
What to do: Track the JPM presenter list as it firms up in December. A pulled slot or a surprise add is a signal to research, not to buy blindly. Treat it as a lead, then confirm with the company’s actual announcement.
Step 4: Position-Size the Rumor as Speculation, Not Fact
The week before JPM, deal rumors leak and small caps run on nothing but chatter. Some of those rumors are real; most are not. The danger is buying the rumor at the top and holding into a “no deal” resolution.
What to do: If you trade a JPM rumor, size it like a lottery ticket, not a thesis. The 1-2% per-catalyst rule applies. A rumor-driven run of 30% into the conference is a sell, not a buy, unless a deal is actually announced. For the mechanics of trading an announced deal, see how to trade biotech M&A deal spreads.
Step 5: Sell the JPM Pop
January deals historically get faded. A company that gets bought re-rates to the deal price and stays there; a company that pre-announces a beat often pops and then gives the move back over the following weeks as the January-effect buyers who chased the sector take profits.
The January effect itself is real: biotech broadly rallies into early January as tax-loss selling from December reverses. That re-rating concentrates in JPM week, and it is the reason the sector often peaks right before it fades. The Q4 2026 playbook covers the tax-loss mechanics in detail.
What to do: If a position pops on a JPM announcement, take the gain. Do not hold into February expecting the January bid to keep paying you.
Common Mistakes
- Treating JPM like ASCO and waiting for a data readout. There is no data. The move is deals and guidance, and it happens in the week before and during the conference.
- Buying the rumor the week of JPM. The rumor-driven run happened in December. By JPM week you are the exit liquidity.
- Chasing a pre-announcement after it is public. The stock already moved on the headline. You are buying the news, not the signal.
- Holding through February. The January bid fades. The sector-wide rally is seasonal, and the seasonal buyer leaves after the conference.
Final Checklist
- Mark January 11-14, 2027 on the calendar now
- Screen sub-$5B names with 2027 catalysts and under 18 months of cash
- Track the JPM presenter list for pulled or surprise slots
- Size any rumor trade at 1-2%, as speculation
- Sell the JPM pop, do not hold into the February fade
